   Dr. Ashok Jhunjhunwala is Professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Madras India. He received a B.Tech degree from IIT, Kanpur, and M.S. and Ph.D degrees from the University of Maine, USA. He has been a member of the faculty at IIT, Madras since 1981 and Department Chair until recently. Professor Jhunjhunwala has the unique distinction among academics for combining innovations in technology and business incubation with the social goal of sustainable development in India.
  Dr. Jhunjhunwala leads the Telecommunications and Computer Networks Group (TeNeT) of IIT Madras faculty whose members have been working closely with industry in the development of a number of products suitable for developing countries using affordable technologies for more than a decade. Indeed this goal has led to the creation of several technologies like the low cost ATM, a remote medical diagnostic kit, a low bit-rate video-conferencing software, multi language office suite, a weather monitoring kit and many other products all of which have been incubated by the Tenet Group into successful commercial ventures.
  One of his key areas of work has been the development of corDECT Wireless Local Loop (WiLL) along with Midas Communication Technologies Pvt., Ltd. This technology has been deployed in Argentina, Brazil, Tunisia, Madagascar, Kenya, Angola, Nigeria, Yemen, Fiji and Iran. A couple of years ago, he initiated the setting up of the Center for Excellence in Wireless Technology (CEWiT), a public private Center with the objective of making India one of the leaders in wireless technology. Besides creating IPR, the Center drives a consortium of Indian operators, academia, and government and technology providers to incorporate Indian requirements and IPR in international standard bodies. Broadband corDECT has recently been designed to provide broadband wireless access in small towns and rural areas.
  Dr. Jhunjhunwala has been instrumental in setting up IITM's Rural Technology and Business Incubator (RTBI) that functions as a formal technology incubator to design, pilot and incubate scalable rural inclusive business ventures. Dr. Jhunjhunwala is Chairman of RTBI.
   Dr. Ashok Jhunjhunwala has been the recipient of the prestigious Padma Shri Award by the Government of India in the year 2002. He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee to the Prime Minister of India (SAC-PM).
