II. Taking Telecom to rural India: IITM's Rural Technology and Business Incubator (RTBI) and N-Logue Communications, Vortex Engineering, Neurosynaptics, Lattice Bridge Info Tech, CK Shakti and OOPS, Chennai

In the year 2000, Dr.Jhunjhunwala and his Group realized that the telecom revolution in India is unlikely to touch rural areas. Dr. Jhunjhunwala.s early initiative in rural connectivity titled .Sustainable Access in Rural Areas (SARI), began as a joint project involving the .Center for International Development at Harvard, MIT Media Lab and McKinsey became a company called N-Logue Communications Pvt. Ltd was India.s first Internet Service Provider (ISP) with a technology infrastructure and business model specific to rural parts of India.

N-Logue Communications has set up Internet Kiosks in about 2000 villages. The software and technology for various services provided at these kiosks have been specially designed by Dr. Jhunjhunwala and his Group keeping the rural consumer in mind and include a multi-lingual office package, video conferencing software called I See, a remote diagnostic health kit, a low cost ATM and a weather monitoring kit among other products. N-Logue is a World Summit on Information Society (WSIS) Award Winner in the category of e-inclusion at Geneva in Dec 2003.

Dr. Jhunjhunwala.s work in promoting rural wealth generation through technology is founded on the belief that innovations alone cannot drive development. It is his view that technology innovations must be coupled by an active support of entrepreneurship and capacity building in rural areas. It is to further this objective that Dr. Jhunjhunwala initiated the setting up of IITM.s Rural Technology and Business Incubator (RTBI) under the behest of the Dept. of Science and Technology (DST) and the World Bank under its InfoDev Project in 2006. It is a Society that functions as an incubator to design, pilot and incubate scalable rural inclusive business ventures.

RTBI's mission is to facilitate the generation of wealth in rural India by leveraging Information and Communication Technologies (ICT's) for social development. It aims to do this by encouraging entrepreneurs to build companies with a rural focus and to mediate between urban enterprise and rural potential. The Incubation Sectors of RTBI include

  • Education
  • Livelihood
  • Agriculture
  • Health
  • Financial Inclusion
  • Vocational Training
  • IT Innovations
  • Energy

A research team at RTBI focuses on building project specific online surveys for its rural database while its IT teams support these sectors in their endeavors to provide community specific, affordable solutions in technology.

RTBI has incubated two start-up ventures focused on generating rural entrepreneurs. Professor Jhunjhunwala.s vision behind these companies is to use IT management solutions for providing jobs in rural areas be they in rural business process outsourcing . the objective of DesiCrew Solutions or production/manufacturing . the aim of Rural Outsourced Production Enterprise (ROPE). This Dr. Jhunjhunwala believes will mitigate the widespread rural-urban migration in the country and offer entrepreneurship opportunities in rural areas.

RTBI.s third start-up is InteliZon Energy Private Limited. A Hyderabad based company dedicated to providing smart solar solutions for the developing world.
