III. Making Computing and Broadband affordable to lower sections of society in India: Novatium Technologies, Chennai

Recently, Dr. Jhunjhunwala along with a Mumbai based entrepreneur Rajesh Jain incubated Novatium Technologies a company that has come up with a revolutionary computing solution in the form of a multi-media thin client (TC) called the Nova netPC.

The concept is to provide low-cost, zero maintenance, total computing solution for lower sections of society as a service, equivalent to a personal computer. This, $10 per month service divides computing into two parts . the front end carries out multi-media coding/decoding and graphics and handles screen, key board, mouse and USB port (for camera, memory stick). The backend is a server hosting all software and that carries out file handling and all computing. The front end takes up 75-80% of the computing load and the server is shared by a large number of users. The two are connected using broadband communications. The front-end becomes a device with zero maintenance and is extremely low cost. Tomorrow a cell phone plus a monitor and a full keyboard and mouse can work as a front end with the software downloadable on inexpensive cell phones. The new concept (See Newsweek Feb 12, 2007 .The $100 PC Looms, p 32) could revolutionize computing. Novatium Technologies won the Sun Innovate 07 Innovation Award for its vision .Computing for the Next Billion..
